Research shows that an estimated 5000 fishermen die on Lake Victoria every year due to different causes. Heavy storms in the lake, alcoholism and lack of Life jackets being one of major contributors to this menace, posing a major risk of existence to the Africa Fishermen Communities.
The Africa Fishermen Foundation is a non-profit organization that seeks to highlight and enhance the role of Fishermen in the Blue Economy, develop innovative solutions for the fishing industry, and improve the lifestyle and welfare of Fishermen across Africa.
During their visit to Migingo Island from 8th to 11th August 2020, it was reported that 3 fishermen had already died in the lake that month alone, and rescue operations were ongoing, but chances of locating their bodies were low majorly because the fishermen don’t wear life jackets.
The high cost of life jackets was quoted as the biggest reason why most fishermen can’t afford them since the wages they receive mostly go into taking care of family and other basic needs.
Other fishermen reported that the locally available life jackets were of poor quality, short durability and hence not economically viable to purchase.
The Africa Fishermen Foundation is humbly requesting you to donate into this initiative so that we can fit all fishermen around Migingo Island and Lake Victoria at Large with High Quality Life Jackets to help save lives.
These findings motivated their team to carry out more research in the fishing industry, by visiting other fishing communities along the coastal towns and other water bodies in Kenya, to find out about their challenges and how they can raise awareness to bring change.
